Default 327 block with small crack

I need to know if this crack in this 64 block is significant. It's at the rear of the block on the passenger side. It's less than an inch long on a circular boss with an 'insert' in it. It's at 9 oclock on the boss which is at 3 oclock on the back of the block. It appears to be 'old'.

If it's in a load bearing part of the engine and is significant, can it be repaired?

Appreciate any help I can get here. Thanks in advance.

I'm not getting the image to load from photobucket. Here's the url or link to the picture I took: http://s471.photobucket.com/albums/r...t=_DSC0001.jpg

That is the dowel pin hole used to align the bell housing. Unless you are drag racing it, I wouldn't worry too much about it. I would try and get the dowel out to where it will keep you bell housing in alignment while you tighten everything down.

Use the IMG line, not the direct link.

Right click on the IMG line and "copy", then "paste" it in your post. That's how I do it. May be other ways.

I agree, it's an alignment hole, not critical, but with the right stresses in the right amount, it could grow. Before you drop it in the engine, drill a small hole just past where it looks like the crack ends. The rounded hole will stop the crack before it has a chance to cause trouble.

Find a local auto machine shop who has a "Lock n Stitch" repair kit, if you dont fix cracks in cast iron, they only get bigger over time. Other possibility is a powder torch repair, I would at least drill a hole with a drill motor into the end of the crack to keep it from spreading.

That's from guys at the machine shop spinning the Block on the concrete floor with the dowel pins in. I would try drilling a hole at the base of the crack if your not going to have it fix. Just a precaution to keep the crack from growing Shouldn't be a problem...

I agree that it will not be a problem. However, the dowel should stick out about a half inch, not flush as shown in your picture. It's important that the bellhousing line up correctly with the block to avoid vibration and/or seal issues, depending on what trans you run.

This is exactly correct. Cracks never get smaller they only get bigger. Enlarging the radius at the end of the crack will dissipate the stresses and the crack will not grow. A ball end mill would be ideal to get a spherical radius but a small drill point is the next best thing.
