Are there any tips for tightening the carb nuts on fuel lines when replacing fuel filter. How tight can you tighten those to nuts. Would you suggest putting anything on the threads before tightening to prevent potential gas leaks?
When you tighten them, definitely use flare nut wrenches. The metal will nuts will strip easy otherwise.
I did carefully use some Yellow gas line teflon tape (from Lowe's). Some folks will say... no, no don't use teflon tape, but if you carefully wrap it around the threads and not over the opening, it'll do just fine.
If you go to take it apart again, be sure to use new tape every time. One complete strip around the threads with a little over lap is enough, usually.
I used Permatex form-a-gasket on my fuel filter and carb hard line fittings. My carb fitting didn't leak but my '68 has the fuel return that originates in the canister fuel filter, and that sucker leaked no matter how snug I got the fittings. Like G-sting says, just keep it a few threads back from the opening. Works great and comes right off when you want to replace the filter
