Now its time for my cars problem of the day for Sunday March 24th. :mad Driving it today I noticed a whinning noise that almost sounds like a loose belt. It increases with engine speed and does it all the time except when the car is stopped and the clutch is pushed in. If the car is in neutral and my foot is off the clutch it still makes the noise. It doesnt seem to affect anything it just makes an annoying noise. Any ideas what this could be.
Unfortunately your symptoms sound like the bearings in the main shaft are frozen. If you have a garage then you should drop the tranny and rebuild it, plus install a new clutch, throw-out bearing, and pilot bearing. If it's just a main shaft bearing then it they just cost around $35.
I rebuilt my tranny last year. It was a lot of fun, I purchased the rebuild kit with new synchros; plus new bearings...I picked the heavy duty bearing which has more ***** in it than the stock bearing. I was able to get everything back together using a propane heater to warm up the bearings and sleeves which the manual says need to be pressed on.
Let me know if you are going to do it yourself and I'll send you my video.
