Default Z bar question

Somehow, mine has come loose from the block. I can see where the ball joint thing seems to have popped off, and what has been happening is that every time the lcutch is pressed, then released, it loosens the thread that ball joint is on just a little, so that now the clutch no longer engages fully when the pedal is pushed. Seems like a pretty simple fix. Anything I should now about while I'm under there?

Hi K,
I believe the ball stud has a nut on it to tighten back against the block after you set the ball stud to the proper depth to receive the end of the z-bar.
It sounds like your ball stud has bcome loose and allowed the z-bar to move out of alignment.
Regards,
Alan

Maybe the original stud had the extra locking nut or maybe some of the earlier years, my 80 is just one solid piece

Hi Kevin,
MH is right
When I first answered I just felt the nut with my fingers; couldn't see it.
A closer look shows no nut but 2 flats on the ball shaft that you can use an open-end wrench on to tighten the shaft against the block.
Then the z-bar slides on the ball. Sorry if I had you looking for a nut.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan

Thanks for the help, guys. Gonna wait till a little later, right now the temp gauge (the sweat dripping down my back and into my butt) says it's about 102 degrees out, and humid.

And Alan.......looking at that pick of you engine bay makes me SICK. How in the name of Jesus's left nipple ring do you manage to keep that engine bay so CLEAN? It's sickening....it really is......

Hi Kevin,
The car has been driven VERY little since I finished it.
Most would say I'm quite loony!!! In fact EVERYONE says that.

Alan

I see a fairly large spec of dirt in one of the pics but I'm sorry I can't tell you the exact location

Years ago I was having clutch issues. I pulled the ballstud and took it to the dealer to check it against the proper part # that they had in stock. Luckily I discovered that the ballstud that was installed on my car was the incorrect size. I purchased the oem correct part number and it made a difference. If memory serves me correctly there are two different part numbers for the ballstud. I would at a minimum check to make sure you have the correct one while you are in there. Can't hurt to double check.

I'm assuming you have an original ball stud. I installed a Tremec 5 speed from a kit, and the ball stud provided was not a GM part. It cracked at the base of the ball after a week of use. If you can get at the threads, a little red thread locker will help. If it is apart, polish up the ball and seat to eliminate friction that could unscrew it. Lubricate of course.

5/8" wrench will fit those flats but, Alan, I'm surprised your "perfect Vette" dosen't have the felt grease "O" ring on the block end of the Zbar (I've always been impressed with the level of detail in your Vette one awesome piece of work.)

Here it is at Wilcox:http://willcoxcorvette.com/advanced_...eywords=clutch

Hi,
The felt is there; it's pushed into the open end of the z-bar a bit so you can't see it from the picture's angle.
Regards,
Alan

I talked to someone on the NCRS board today and they asked me when was the last time I washed it?
I think about September of 1972.
SICK!!!!!

I thought that from all the diagrams I looked at that the rubber on the block ball stud was enough and most kits just gave you an extra felt. What is the proper order of assembly?
