Default 700r4 transmission Q!

I have decided to upgrade my TH350 to a 700r4 transmission, so for those of you that have done this conversion can I retain my orginal TH350 shift linkages and will they fit to the 700r4, or do I need to have a different set up?
Appreciate any help, thanks Neil.

You can use your original shifter just as it is if you want. Even though the trans. will shift into 1st. like it should, you will not be able to select 1st. with your shifter. The Shiftworks kit supplies you with a modified shifter stop so you can select low gear as well as the parts to convert your shift position indicator, and the bracket to attach the shifter cable to the trans pan.
Other than that, your cooler line will work, you will need to shorten your drive shaft about 3 in. and relocate the parking brake cable wheel. Lastly, you will have to modify, or purchace the bracket that the 350 trans sits on. You do not need a new crossmember.
You will like the swap.

Does the 700R4 require an adjustable throttle cable assembly. I understand the 700R4 was designed for computer operation so non-computer cars require a throttle cable, and, a modification internal to the tranny. I hear that it is a pain to adjust for smooth (not launching) shifts?

NO, the 4L60e is the computer version of a 700, the '87-92? version I hope you have is hydraulic and has another extra valve in the controls, the need for a TRANS GO shift kit has been demonstrated....don't use any other....

the only computer part of the 700 is the lockup, but inside the unit there is a 4th gear switch...that locks the converter in 4th gear only....
so you only need supply +12 switched voltage to the 4 pin connector on the driver's side apron....

see the ATSG service manual for the wiring/instructions....

there are a ton of upgrades for it, and I recommend the torrington sun shell.....BRUTE....

Oh, edit....the kickdown is fairly easy to mount and adjust, make sure it's on the snug side, that's about it.....if shifts are too late or violent for you, relax the cable a tad....

Check out the site @ Bow Tie Overdrives (dot com) they have a lot of stuff that is or may be needed for the swap including crossmembers, shifter conversion kits (so you can use your stock shifter and still have access to first gear) , also the plastic gears for speedometers etc, etc..if your using a holley carb...you need the bracket for a 700r4 for proper kickdown behaviour and may I suggest the Lockar setup (bracket, kickdown cable and throttle cable) it makes life so much easier with it.... Have fun and good luck.

I have the shiftworks kit in my 77. It's a very smart setup. One thing you need to know (that took me a while of fighting with) is that you don't mix old parts with new if you use the kit. If you buy the kit and put the new shift gate in, put the new shift foot on the trans as well. You will fight the shifting until you're blue in the face if you don't!

Methinks you be over spending on parts there, that white solenoid on the pix is something inside the tranny, along with that pressure switch with 2 contacts.....that all comes with the tranny unless you rebuilding it yourself....they run about 30 bux at the local parts house....

the wiring harness white square plug there, comes from junkyards, just cut plenty of wire with it....typically free, here....

I wire it with a BWD S870 brake light switch, in place of the stock one, but has a switch that OPENS the ign sw controlled +12 feed line to the tranny, when the brakes are pressed.....the lockup control is off the internal wiring to the pressure switches in 4th gear, maybe 2-3 also, depending....

The brake switch you will need is one for a corvette with cruise control. It has two internal switches. The one for the brake light is "normaly open" till you step on the brake then it closes and completes the circut for the brake lights to come on. The other is "normaly closed, allowint the circut to operate as long as the brake pedal is NOT pushed. This will allow the TC to lock up. When you push the brake pedal, this circut will "open" disengaging the lock up circut for the TC. Hope this helps for that part. I can't help with the internals of the tranny though.
