Default 82 A/C Compressor Help Needed

The compressor on my 82 is cycling on and off about every 5 seconds. I have read that the freon level may be low.The compressor is also making a rattling or grinding sound when the clutch is engaged during this cycling. could this also be from a low freon level or does this sound like the compressor is on its way out? The problem has just started within the last week and the noise is not present when the air conditioning is turned off. The car still has the original R12 equipment on it.Any thought are greatly appreciated.

Default

cycling can be an indication of low charge.

without a set of service gauges its just a guess.

The oil travels with the freon so if you have a leak chances are very good that you lost some oil along with the freon.

rattling and grinding don't sound good for the compressor.

really need a set of gauges to trouble shoot the system
