Default Brake Calipers

I have a 81 and I need to change the left front caliper because it is leaking pretty bad. Do I need to change both front calipers?

No, you don't need to, but since you'll probably need new pads due to the leaking caliper getting brake fluid on them, you'll definitely want to replace the pads on both sides at the same time. I would also recommend that you clean both rotors thoroughly at the same time to remove any brake fluid residue.

Having said all that, if one caliper is leaking, it's a pretty safe bet the opposite caliper is in similar condition and will likely start leaking soon, so you might consider changing them both at the same time. At the very least, I would flush the brake fluid from the front circuit with new clean fluid to give it a fighting chance.

Good luck... GUSTO

Thanks guys. The biggest reason why it's leaking is it's not driven enough. My bad!!

You need to do a front brake job.
Both calipers and pads.

If the pads are perfect, and dry ( good luck ) you can reuse them as long as you don't mix them up. Same side of the same rotor...

Also check the rubber lines. If they are over 10 years old or if you have never replaced them yourself. Do it now, they are overdue. Rubber lines have a 10 year life expectancy.

We recommend doing calipers in axle sets, it saves hassle down the road. Let me know if I can help with parts.

Make sure you replace them with o ring calipers, (less likely to leak) and from a mfg/shop that has a lifetime warranty. I got mine from Zip and it has a lifetime deal that if it ever leaks etc, just bring it back and they replace it no questions.

People replace single calipers all the time with no problems, though personally I prefer to replace them in pairs. Brakes aren't something I like to take shortcuts with.

If the car does sit that much, you may want to upgrade to O-ring calipers. The O-ring ones will last longer on cars that aren't used regularely.

Not actually. All of them eventually begin to leak with age.

FWIW: the remaining three are as old as the leaky one. My advice is to replace all four at one time and save future work.

yes. Whatever you do to one side of any brake or suspension system must be done to the other side.

To not do the other side is really half-azz.

Not to highjack this thread but are all aftermarket calipers stainless steel sleeved?
I'm wanting the VBP o-ring calipers but can only afford Autozone.

Can I buy Autozone and then later retrofit the VBP o-ring pistons?
