I just finished replacing all the control arm bushings, ball joints, etc. In order to get the upper control arm out, I had to remove the fan and fan shroud. When I replaced the fan, etc and started the engine I got this NOISE, kind of like a bearing noise. The fan turns freely by hand and appears NOT to be hitting anything. With the engine running the fan shaft and the blades seem to be running true, there is no apparent wobble in either. I forgot to mark the location of the fan before removing the 4 nuts, so I don’t think that it went back on the way it came off.
Is this thing out of balance?, did I screw up the water pump?, anybody have a similar problem?, ideas anybody. HELP
It might not be the fan. Get a length of vacuum hose and put one end to your ear while you pass the other end around the front of the engine while it's running. You will end up hearing the noise very loud when you pass over it. It could be a problem with the alternator or the mounting arm for the alt. I put a chrome one on mine and it hit the fan of the alt making quite a racket. It could also be a belt that is too tight, a bad water pump, a misaligned belt, etc. You won't know until you isolate where the noise is coming from exactly. Hope this helps a little.
Did you happen to get any fluids of any type on the belt?
Sometimes "stuff" on the belt can make strange noises. Try a short blast of wd-40 on the pump pulley and see if it goes away
