We can not get my dad's 454 in his chevelle to start and need some help... Had a perfectly good running motor with an older edelbrock 2 plus one intake manifold but decided to switch to an edelbrock air gap endurashine intake. That is where it all went downhill. Installed the new manifold and a new dist. and had problems with the car backfiring through the exhaust which turned out to be a vacuum leak above the number 5 cylinder on the intake... So no big deal ordered new gaskets again put it all back together and it will not start... The car just cranks and doesn't show much sign of wanting to start at all... We have tried new plugs, plug wires, two dist, tried setting the timing a million different ways... All we get is the motor turning over, spark, fuel, and then a pop and a fire ontop of the carb...
I was going to say dizzy as well. Remove #1 spark plug, shove finger in hole have dad click motor over when compression blows finger out of hole check timing marks. See how close to zero you are on the balancer and check rotor on dizzy to see if its firing on #1.
put thumb over hole. Don't put anything in the hole while cranking. I'm sorry to be overly rudimentary but it sounds like this guy is just a kid.
you could be 1 tooth off or you could be 180 out. If theres a dozen teeth on the dist then there's a dozen ways to go wrong.
I guess us grown Kids that have been building and racing performance engines for the last 20 years shouldnt pots in this guys presence. oh i wonder if this will fit in the hole.
