The thing only fit on one way, obviously....the trick is...

does it go to the first stop with about a 120* turn on the hook of the spring....or does it go on more than that??

I did one to the first stop, and so it's weak, I think...goes up ok though...

but wonder if pinning the center 180* out and wrapping the spring around for a near 360* total would be better???

Mmmm, this dosent sound like much fun. My problem is that I am in New Zealand, my springs are shot and I have new ones sitting waiting to be put in, so I pretty much have to install them myself, so any info or advice would be most appreciated regardless of how bad the job is

Thanks Pete for the photo,

I guess the main questions I have (bearing in mid that I have not yet taken the door panel off so I dont know what the layout is) is how do you get to the spring and how do you fit it - ie. do you do it with the regulator mechanism in place in the door or with the mechanism out of the door etc. I dont actually know if the spring is under tension when the window is up or when it is down or both? All I know is that my rusty broken spring was sitting in the bottom of the door.

cheers
Kev

I believe that the spring is under the most tension with the glass down. In the pic the regulator is about half way. The arrow points to a bolt and nut that is installed, that is the position that you want the regulator in when you put the motor on. Then remove the bolt & nut.
Once the motor is installed the regulator is collapsed then slid into the door and extended and then installed.
I can't find any info on just replacing the spring.

Thanks for the info Pete, there must be someone who has just replaced the springs, hopefully they can fill in the blanks

Thanks again

I replaced my 79 driver side spring without removing the regulator with poor results. It does work but is still slow compared to passenger side so Ill have to drill the regulator rivets and my intention is to follow the instructions found here: http://www.corvettemagazine.com/tech...rticles/c3/87/ and in other places. I think this is the only way to get the appropriate spring tension at installation-unfortunately. Good luck.

i put a bolt in as shown in the above pictures. Then I clamped vice grips on the spring end pointing up and grabbed them with a really large set of water pump plyers.

do be careful, it can hurt if it smacks you

Does anyone have this link? It shows that it is no longer available and I need to replace my drivers side spring

Hi Kohn,
This is an old post and I guess that you want to change your window spring so here's how:

Secure the regulator in a vice.
Have a helper hold the 'arm' and be ready to apply downward pressure.
Remove the nut and bolt.
Unwind the 'arm'.
Replace the spring.
Wind back up and install the bolt and nut.
