I picked this ignition control box from MSD for the build on my new 555 and it has a problem that I finally figured out and it will be replaced by MSD but I'm curious if anyone has had the same failure.
Problem started very early on and has persisted for ~1200 mi on the new build. Rev limiter set to 6200 rpm and engine cuts out at ~3200 rpm then is OK up ~ 4500 rpm where it misses like all get out. After trying all kinds of trouble shooting with the carb, fuel, fuel pressure, etc decided to crank up the rev limiter to 9000 rpm and the problem immediately stopped. Drove like I stole it for ~30 mi and no problems what so ever. MSD said ship it back after the new one arrives on Monday.
Anyone else have a failure like this on the 6520 box?
Well it wasn't the MSD box after all. The new box arrived today via FedEx and guess what.....exact same issue at exactly the same rpms. As it turns out the wire from the box to the distributor and the coil wire were running too close together and getting cross talk. They were approximately 2" apart and that is not enough. 4" however is enough and now it works great. Live & Learn.
Jim-
It is outragously awesome!! Thanks for the inspiration to do it!
I'm still amazed at how street friendly it is around town and when you get down to business it's all business. The torque this thing delivers is phenominal. I still need to shoot a video and get it uploaded and I promise I will in the next couple of weeks. My wife just got a bilateral (double) knee replacement and I'm burning the candle on both ends right now while she is rehabing. She just completed 3 weeks post op so I'm able to get out a little more with the car.
When is your CE article on the rear end build up coing out? I got on Tom's list for a billet 12 bolt housing when he releases it later this year.
