My car will often grind going into second, with the clutch pedal on the floor when I shift quickly. It never does it when I shift slowly. Someone told me the other night that the synchro was bad. What's involved with replacing it (or them)? Does the trans have to come out, and do the work on a bench? Is it a "might as well compeletly rebuild the trans" while your at it kind of thing?
There are brass rings that fit "cones" on the gears. The brass gets worn, egg-shaped, or the teeth get worn. The idea is that the brass ring puts pressure on the "cone" on the gear during a shift and forces the gear to match speed with the rest of the shaft so it shifts easily.
