Default TH350 fluid leak question

I think my TH350 trans is leaking at the shaft where the shift lever connects just above the pan on the driver's side. Is there a seal on that shaft that I can replace with the trans in the car?

Yes, you cn obtain the seal at NAPA (called a shift selector seal) and I would HIGHLY recommend using the seal remover tool. I purchased one from Snap-on.

Thanks Dan. I unbolted the shift lever and I can see that the leak is coming from that seal. I will definitely get one of those tools.

When you install the new seal, wrap the shaft with some heavy paper so the edges of the shaft don't cut the new seal.

The seal removal tool will do the job well. But it is an unnecessary expense in most instances. Just drive a new seal into the bore on top of the first one. There is room for two without a problem. You can also remove the bad seal by using an icepick to push through the rubber seal lip and under the metal case...then use the pick as a pry to pop out the old seal. Just be careful not to damage the seal bore or the shaft when you do it.

Or you can spend the money to buy the 'special' tool....

Thanks guys for all the advice, suggestions, pictures and even an offer to loan me the tool (RedZR). 7T1vette, I don't doubt what you're saying, but I'm a little leary of nicking the shaft or the case if I don't use the tool. BTW - I have the pan off, so is it worth it to pull the shaft out? Later today I will try to buy a seal so I can see what it looks like before I decide how to replace it.
