Has anyone used the Pertronix Ignitor III in their point-set distributor? How did it perform? How easy was installation? Aside from a different coil, were any other modifications necessary? Can the big-block type braided ignition wires be used with the Ignitor III module?
I have one in my wife's 70 LT-1 and its running strong after 5,000+ miles. Just for "correctness sake" the K-66 amplifier is still mounted on the radiator support but, I can sleep better with the Ignitor III 7000RPM rev limiter. Still running the same set of spark plugs I broke the motor in with and with the low impedance (0.32 Ohms) Pertronix coil spark is pretty decent but, I wasn't happy to see the "Made in China" sticker on the bottom of that coil. I also run the 7mm black Pertronix wires with Autolite platinum plugs. Like I said, the big Holley hasn't killed the plugs yet and that is probably the best testimate to the Ignitor III's performance.
I installed the Pertronix Ignitor III ignition module along with the Pertronix Flame-Thrower III 45,000 volt, 0.32 ohms coil. I went with the black Flame-Thrower III coil to maintain a factor appearance (also comes in chrome finish). Installation was pretty easy but requires 12 volts to the coil. On my LS5, that required splicing a copper wire in place of the resistor wire that goes to the positive terminal on the coil. It started right up, engine runs great. I didn’t change plugs, wires, or anything. The AC plugs that were in there were pretty fouled from a rich mixture. I recently had the same plugs out for a look see and this time, their color indicated a correct mixture. The engine definitely seems to do a job better combusting fuel mixture. I think it runs stronger but don’t have any track times to prove it. I can’t vouch for how well the Ignitor III rev limiter function works because I haven’t bumped up against it.
