Default Interior Paint

I am trying to restore the shift plate in my 68. I have cleaned the plate down to the bare metal and b-4 I paint it with the Hi-Tech lacquer I need to know if there is a special primer that should be used. I painted it once on top of the existing paint and it looked bad.
It is very time consuming masking and did not want to do it a third time.

I used Dupli-color trim paint direct to the metal, had no problems.

Plate painting.

Did it on my 70 and to do it right is very time consuming. I used Krylon Semi Flat for paint. I tried tape and did not like it. I ended up using very sharp razor blades to get the paint off and lacquer thinner to do final detail

Mine looks factory new and was worth all the work. One key I found is that the razor works best once paint is tack free but not dry. It will chip even with a new blade if you let it dry too much. Edges go quickly. Lettering took a while.

Hi,
I, too, have had good results with spraying the entire plate and using a new x-acto blade to slice the paint off the chrome surface as soon as the paint flashes.
Give it a try?
Regards,
Alan

If you prime it, use a primer of the same brand and type as the finish paint.

Bill/Alan,
Did you use one or two coats? If two, did you just wait a few minutes then hit it with another light coat? I'm about to do my gauge cluster and don't want to go through the pain of stripping again...

I stripped mine.

Then painted it with satin black enamel. I know enamel is not original but after trying a few paints it produced the most robust finish and the best satin black i could find. Used multiple coats allowing the paint to flash between.

Once it had dried I used a razor blade to remove it from the areas that should be chrome.

More detail here on my update thread.

(and on previous pages it covers sub components of the console trim plate, heater controls etc).

What did you use to trip the original paint?

I used a product called citrus-strip.

Less caustic than some of the other strippers around but does a good job.

Then cleaned it off with thinners.

May I suggest SEM Trim Black #39143

Needs no primer. Exact match to the factory finish and resists chipping.

Where did you purchase SEM Trim Black? My 68 console has a smooth finish vs. your textured. I will follow your path as I am about to strip it for the third time.

Hi cf,
Often your local auto body supplier will have SEM paints since it's pretty well known and popular.

Many thanks for all that commented on painting the shift plate on my 68 four speed. Finished it this weekend and it looks better than new.
