Default Question for Mountainmotor?

In refernece to my previous post you said that I went to lite on my cam selection which was a comp 268XE. What cam would you recomend that would improve horsepower, but still allow good vacuum for my power steering and power brakes. I also have AC. Also I did a search on my carb Edelbrock 1901 to attempt to find new jets and rods that would be more appropriate for my application but was unable to find anything. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

My bad,I went to your page and saw where you have the XE 268.With the 3.08 gear you have and automatic transmission that is a pretty good cam choice.I know you do not want headers but that will yield your largest gain or improvement.
For what it is worth here is what I would have done in your situation while buying parts
Comp XM 270H cam
A $90.00 Alabama brand 2000 stall converter
A nice set of headers with the thick flanges
A modded q-jet from a shop like Jet or The Carb Shop

Still though your cam will work well after carb is tuned properly.
I think if you were to get in touch with either of those companies and tell them what you have they would be more than willing to sell you the correct hangers and rods for your combination.Although a idle circuit rework might be in order for optimum results. You might call them and see what they think about your carb/motor combination.I think you would be surprised how a "worked" q jet will perform and how much smoother the idle will be.

Everything is a compromise on a street car.Headers really pick up the performance of a Big Block Chevy though.Gas mileage as well in motor combination like yours .I would lean in that direction as well as towards the purchase of carb parts through one of the above companies.

Hope this helps to some extent.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions!
P.S. I have a M20 four speed.
Anyway I am going to contact the carb shops that you mentioned to see if I can get some additional performance out of my Edelbrock 1901.
I know that headers would be an improvement, but I'm not ready to
make that move right now.
