I have a 1976 Vette. L82 four speed. Was a fantastic car. Last year I had it stored in my garage waiting for spring. No battery no gas. We had what was called the perfect storm. My house and garage were flooded. Didn't have time to get anything out. Lost it all. Act of God. No insurance coverage.
I got the vette running and water drained out of everything. Mechanically is good to a point. Need to replace interiror and gauges and such. My problem is I would start her up and move her up and down the driveway. Just to keep things moving. Well I backed her out and now won't go in any other gear. Won't go into reverse. When it should be neutral it is in reverse. I can shift the shifter through the gears. When I put her in a forward gear it feels like I have the emergancy brake on. Nothing happens except motor whats to stall.
When I firts backed out I couldn't get her out of reverse. Finally popped out with more force than should be needed. What is wrong and have I broken something.
Thanks Ron
Interior and gauges? How much of a flood are you talking about?
If water was that high you probably need to rebuild the shifter and get rid of the rust on the linkage and re-lube all pivot points. Sounds like the linkage is severely seized up!

A few questions first.
Your Location?
Fresh or brackish water?
How long was it underwater?
Was any silt deposited in the car?
How soon after the flooding did you do any work and what was it?
Got a lot of experience with flood cars, so answers can help beyond just the shifter problem.
I had insurance on my home and contents. My garage and contents. Seeing as it was the perfect storm and was considered an act of God the insurance company didn't have to cover. The Government stepped in to help. I lost my house and contents. Was given 30,000.00 to rebuild my home and replace my belongings. Anything else to bad. That meant the contents of my garage. I'm only interested in getting my car back on the road not who is responsible and who is going to pay, because no one is going to step up to the plate and addmitt that they were the reason the dikes failed.
Thanks
I think there is a possibility that the transmission filled with some water and internal parts are corroded and not functioning now, I would rebuild transmission.

I drained the motor fluids, tranny fluids and rear end. Flood was last Nov. It locked up in June. If I move rods around trying to line things up I can get it out of reverse but it locks in a forward gear.
thanks

Hey
The car was under for a day. I got it pulled out and into a shop the next day. It was freash water. No silt. The bad thing or maybe good thing my heating oil tank tipped and coated everything with oil. Bad for material good for electricle connections.
Thanks Ron
