Hello, I have a 75 L82 auto with approx 73k miles. Car runs great, except I've noticed that the transmission doesnt always downshift like I feel it should. Very often, when in third gear going between 40-50mph, "punching" the throttle, the tranny doesnt shift down into second as it should all the time. Any way to adjust or modify this? Could this be an issue with my tranny fluid levels? The car shifts very smooth, and I do not want to take out/rebuild the tranny unless I REALLY need to. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
There is a WOT "kickdown" switch on the throttle linkage under the dash. That switch (when energized) powers a little solenoid valve mounted to the underside of the valve body on the transmission. Your problem could be anything from a simple adjustment of the kickdown switch, a bad switch, faulty wiring from the switch to the tranny, a faulty connector/wire at the tranny, or a bad solenoid valve on the tranny valve body.
You just need to use a digital voltmeter to trace out the 12vdc signal from the switch to the tranny. If the switch works correctly and the 12v signal is getting to the tranny, you would need to drop the trans oil pan and check out the wire going to the solenoid valve and/or the valve itself. That valve can be plugged up with gunk so that it doesn't function right...or it can be "toast".
