If it is for a 454 it will be external unless it states otherwise. I had to buy a new balancer for my 454 and they all said external balanced. By looking there will be a weight on the inside rear of the balancer.

All factory 454's were external balance, 427's were internal balance. A 454 can be internally balanced with an aftermarket crank or with a factory crank and heavy metal. If the original either has more weight cast into one side or a bunch of holes drilled in one area, it's external balance.
