where is a good place to get my valve covers re-chromed? It is a '71 Big Block. I live near Albany, NY. I think, if I can, I should get valve covers re-chromed rather than trash them. thanks...
check the price for the re-chrome. are the OEM?? if so it may be worth it. if you decide to go that way, check in with your local motorcycle guys and see who they use for their chrome. i guarantee it will be the best place in the area for the work. those guys are really **** when it comes to their chrome.
if they are after market, cheaper to replace them. i have a set of moroso BB chrome covers i had on that auctions site, but never sold them (after my bb el camino was stolen). new in the original box, sitting on a shelf in my garage. i believe i have some pictures if you are interested. i only wanted $50 for the set plus $10 shipping at the time if i remember correctly. let me know if i can help

The only problem with having your valve covers re-chromed is that they were originally given a cheap flash chroming by GM when new. Unless you want to pay good money for a cheap re-chrome job, you'll have a pair that looks far better than when new. That doesn't bother me but purists will point that out to you. My way of looking at it is if I'm paying good money for them to be redone, I don't want them to look cheap...I want my money's worth and look flawless.
I think you'll be better off to buy a set of repro valve covers...they'll cost less and look better than yours did new.
BTW - are you sure the ones you have are original to the car? GM discontinued chrome valve covers after the '69 model year, though some early '70s supposedly came with them. They should be orange rather than chrome.
Dear Roughrider, thanks for the info. What valve covers did you get for yours and from where? Do you know an easy way to tell if mine are original? Thanks again! ED...
from what i see online early 71's are chrome then they used orange painter later. Replacement duplicates are very expensive, like over $500. I do not know what it would cost to have them re-chromed.

My car still has what I assume are its original valve covers...nice shape but definitely the cheap flash chroming.
Have you seen these? http://www.yourcovers.com/valve_covers_9096.php
They are not cheap, but they are very nice valve covers. Much more substantial than typical aluminum valve covers and they're available in cast finish, red or black powder coating or polished finish.
