If it runs fine above 1300rpm then it would seem possible that the ignition timing is to far retarded to get a comfortable idle. Turn the dist 1/4" counter clockwise to advance the timing and see if it helps the idle. Then set it with the light.
Ok, I got it running better. The timing was way off too retarded, I haven't checked it with a light yet, just got it running good enough to get it to the exhaust shop and kinda limped it over there. It still needs alot of fine tuning, but hey, now i can put it in drive and it doesn't die, so that is a start. :smash: :smash:
I prolly won't get around to doing much more tuning for awhile, gonna take a break from working on the car and enjoy what is left of spring break. I will post a ton of pics of the whole project when I get it all working right.
You probably have the Comp Cams anti pump up lifters which can not be set like stock lifters. Back off all about your 1/2 turn down & set running. Of course timing, etc. needs to be right.
Hmm, I did not know there was a difference... I plan on setting the lifters with the engine running now anyway since one of them is tapping. Well, atleast I think one is tapping, it also might be the rocker arms hitting the valve covers. But either way I have to take the valve covers off again so I'll just go ahead and set em right with the engine running.
I can't find any info on these anti-pumpup lifters, there is nothing on the box anywhere. Am I just not looking at the right thing? \
Oh, and when I set them with the engine running then, loosen them till I hear tapping and then tighten down till it goes away, and then 1/2 turn more? or with these lifters do you not turn it down 1/2 turn more and just leave it at no tapping?
1/2 turn beyond the point where the tapping just stops. The engine may stumble when you add this extra 1/2 turn. It should quickly recover as the lifter bleeds down to the preload.
