Default Head Assembly Help

I just got off the phone with Comp Cams to find out what my installed spring height should be. I checked my cam card but it didn't have any info and there wasn't any info that cam with the springs so I had to call. It turns out that my installed spring height should be 1.880". What can I use to measure this height? Thanks.

P.S. Exactly where do I measure from? I'm guessing the bottom of the spring pocket up to the top of the spring?

Shane, installed height is measured from the bottom of the spring pocket up to the bottom of the spring retainer. You measure it without a spring installed.

You're basically measuring the space that the spring will eventually occupy.

EDIT: Take your measurement at the part of the retainer that the spring will touch, not the center where it hangs down inside the spring.

Argh this is so aggravating :mad. I have to wait until Monday to get a mic to accurately measure a piece of rod so I can determine how much I need to shim. On top of that I have to wait to purchase the correct shims. These damn heads are harder to correctly assemble than the entire engine. Right now I'm half tempted just to send them off to the machine shop and have them assembled so that I can finish putting this engine together.

Shane

I would send them to the machine shop. You need a spring height mic ($73 at JEGS) to do the job. A wire will not center your spring retainer.

Hope this helps

I'm probably going to do just that. I'm getting antsy and want to get this engine done. I would think it wouldn't take too long for them to assemble the heads for me, plus I would have the piece of mind knowing that the job was done correctly. I guess you gotta know your limitations :(.

It's not your limitations, its what the tools cost to do the job right.

Sometimes its cheaper to have it done than to get the right tools, another example is trailing arms. Do I need $200 in tools or send it out.
