Default 76 L-82 sb 350 bogging down and stalling

Ok, so I bought this car about 2 months ago. The engine was rebuilt, I don;t have all the specs but it was running poorly. Bogging down sometimes when I hit the gas and stalling at lights and stuff. Not all the time but enough. It had a Edelbrock 750 CFG 1411 carb and an Edelbrock Performer RPM manifold.

So I took it to a mechanic I met at a car show that build hot rods. Spent the day with him, he replaced my Edelbrock with a Holly 600 CFM carb that he rebuilt. He tuned the carb and check the timing and compression. He said the compression was great, about 185-187 on each plug. He said the timing was a little off but when he tried to set it where he thought it should be it ran worse, so he set it closer to what it was when I got there.

He also changed out the "squirter" in the carb from a 28 to a 40.

So That was a few days ago. I don;t think the car is running much better. yesterday I drove it for 15 minites, went into a store and when I came out and tried ot get on the road I hit the gas and it stalled.

I called him tonight and he said he thinks the car has too heavy of a CAM. Again, I didnt put it in so I don't know the specs. He sadi he wants to try a few more things. Or as a last resort I'll need to replce the CAM with amilder one.

Please help...

I am no where close to an expert but it seems to me that if the timing was "not as he thought it should be" that is the first place to look. Timing problems can cause all sorts of other problems. Are you running stock HEI dist.? Does car run well after carb. is off the idle circuit, as in above 1000rpm? Any backfiring out carb. or afterfire out pipes? You need to start with the basics first. Setting TDC on compression stroke on #1 cylinder and checking if rotor is pointing to #1 plug wire. Ck. if firing order is correct and going from there. What did he set the initial timing at? Answer these questions and the guys can give you futher info. mike...

Thanks Mike, HEi I'm not sure Yes, it runs ok when i'm above 1500 or so RPM. It's just when I start from stop that is hesitates, or bogs a little like it's not that crisp in acceleration. Not always but a lot of the time. No back firing that I can remember, maybe once or twice but not really. When I was in his shop he set TDC and changed all the plugs (which looked good) and went through setting timing.

Some more details he wrote down for me:
Compression is excellent (185 - 187)
Engine is about 9.75 to 00+01 (?) compression
ran best at 25 degree initial timing. which was about 40 degree total
no luck with vacuum advance with big camshaft (this is not connected, capped off)
Motor only pulls 7 lbs or vacuum idling

Ok, good start. The guys on the Forum are the best. If you are willing to do some of your own work on this the guys can help. Going from us to your mechanic is potentially a problem. Give us a pic. of the dist.. Good luck, mike...

OK so a couple other things. Here are some pics of the distributor and also note the pic that shows a small leak. My mechanic said he thinks the manifold gasket is leaking a little in the back. Could this effect things? Maybe part of the issue?

Small back fire today at the carb.

Again, this is a rebuilt Holley 600 CFM carb. Vacuum advance has been disconnected and the springs on the distributer were changed out with ones that had a little more tension.

What do you think?

Anyone have any thoughts on this? Wondering where to being? other than replacing the CAM with a mild CAM which is a big job. Thanks.
