Does anyone know any tricks or tips for making my air compressor run any quieter? Would building a insulated box around it work? Even with my ear plug in and inside a small garage the noise drives me nuts.

sorry to hear it guys. i always try to stop people before they buy the oil free units but sometimes a few still slip by. you could build a box around it but since you will absolutely have to make sure there is adequate air flow for the thing to keep cool, it will not likely make that big a difference. like others have said, your best bet is to put it outside if possible. having said that, when the time comes again (and it will) to get another compressor, don't get an oil free. if any of you have ever seen the innards of an oil free, you would be amazed it can move itself much less air. many of them have a one piece piston/rod, the piston is oblong and uses a teflon seal around it to keep the air in the chamber so as it goes back and forth on its stroke, the 'piston' wobles in the bore, so to speak. and since they're oil free, most just run a bearing between the rod and crank. one of the reasons they're so loud is that they have extremely short stroke since the piston is rarely perpandicular to the bore so they turn like a billion RPMs. next time... :nonod:
I am on my second oil free type compressor and yes,it is outside on a small slab I poured and boxed in.I really like them because I do my own painting when needed but like others have said, very loud they are.No maintenance to them but the air filter. The first 80 gallon upright lasted 5 years with abnormal very hard use"sand blasting"at times that thing was hotter than a 2 dollar pistol. Difficult to approximate but around 120 hours of it along with the painting of several boats and two cars and of course running air tools as well.It was actually still working when I sold the house in the country and moved to town.Would only come up to 100 psi though which showed some wear to me.I bought both of them from Sears and used a 50 dollar certificate for a total of $330 or there abouts.
