Default Removing rear cross member

Is there an easy way to remove the rear crossmember? I have to swap the differential. The only time I did this was on a rotted frame and actually had to cut the 'sombreros' out of the bushings

I was thinking of loosening the bolts and then grab the outside of the cross member with a gear puller and press against the loosened retaining bolt. Has anyone ever done it this way or is there a better method?

Thanks
Tom

The pry bar works as does the gear puller. Either one will get the job done.

Hi Tom Sarno,
I just finished droping my diff and crossmember out on my 70 coupe about 3 hours ago. I had everything loose and my floor jack under the diff about a half inch below. Earlier today I had sprayed a ton of pb blaster on the bushings and let it set for a few hours then attemped to pry but was scared to honk down on it till i came in to the CF and did a search under diff crossmember . I read where I could fit a two arm puller over the crossmember to pop it off like you mentioned and when I went to get my three arm puller thought I'd try to pry it one more time with my 3ft pry bar and she poped loose.
Hope this helps.

Did mine that way, had pry bar and sprayed the heck out the bushings as you did and they finally popped....

Hi Tom,
All the advice is right on.
Be careful that you leave the loosned bolts in place or be ready to catch the rear end. It's heavy and when it comes loose, it REALLY comes loose.
Regards,
Alan
