I finally got the gear for the transmission to try and get my speedometer working. I put it in this weekend and it still doesn't work. Is there anything special I need to do to get the gear to lock in, or is it probably an internal problem in the transmission? If I put a drill on the end of the cable the speedometer will turn.
I'm having the same problem. Put in a new gear and housing due to a leak and now the speedo doesn't work properly. It will read a speed but usually way slower that what I'm doing. Other times it just freezes and doesn't move. It will turn with a drill.
Assuming the old gear worked OK, check these things with the new gear;
First, make sure the teeth count of the new gear doesn't exceed the housing capacity; yes, there are 2 different housings - one for lower number teeth (33-37 approx., don't quote me, but the numbers are engraved on the housing), and another housing for the higher 38 + teeth. So if your stock gear was 3.08 and you're going to a 3.91, you may have to get the new housing that fits.
Here's the kicker....all the gears will fit (physically) in either housing, but using the wrong gear in one will not always mesh properly with the trans drive gear because of slightly different lengths (shorter).
Also, check the orientation of the housing when replacing it in the trans......it works properly when oriented as indicated on the housing, though if turned, it still fits but the gears may not mesh.
