they (the 2 red wired taped together but not spliced ) come out of the harness down behind the wheel well on the driver side down by the rag joint they are both taped together and seems were never hooked up to anything before i pulled the motor any suggestions??
Hi mj,
If I'm looking at the right wires in your picture, I believe the wires and the 'right angle' connector are for the back-up light switch on the transmission. It's in an odd place compared to my 71 which has the wires coming through the firewall on the otherside of the column. I'm really just going by the connector shape, so I could be far off.
Regards,
Alan
i agree with Alan 71.
i just completed a complete restoration of my 73, and that connector looks like the backup switch. ..although, my wire colors are yellow and white.. if i recollect correctly.
if you still need info, pm me and i could send you a scan of wiring schem from original manual.
they are a heavier gauge wire maybe 10/12 and the backup lights worked fine with the old trans and i just happened to stumble across these while i was swapping out the vacuum lines... very odd
hmm..
that same plug style is used with your turn signal, and flasher relays... and i can't remmeber for sure, but i think also may be one involved with the stock alarm system.... any of these not functioning?
..i kinda agree with oldsarge... that wire crimp connector back of the plug in reference, is definitely not oem
...where does that wire connect too, btw?
I think I might know what they are, well not what they are but I was working on mine today and happened to notice two heavy red wires connected together closer to the wiper motor.I will take a picture in a bit and see if I can load it. This is a new engine harness so no bubba work has happened on it so far.
After looking at where your wires are it seems that they might go to the horn relay, they are not located in the spot I am seing on my harness.

hmmm interesting lol i hate electrical problems ....
i snapped some more pics. would the alarm wires be this heave gauge?? i hate electrical problems
I've looked at your pics several times , I'm guessing someone cut the fusible link out. I think 76 had a link at the bulkhead connector. In erlier years those red wire would have gone up to the horn relay that mounted on the drivers fender. My 76 diagram is crappy but I'll look and see if I can find the links.

The orange loop in this pic is one of 2 fusible links that protect the ammeter , the other one is at the horn relay.

Probably going to have to get some help from some guys with 76s to be sure but I think in this pic the wire with the yellow crimp connector used to have a black connector and plugged into the other black connector. In other words 4 wires plugging in and the one red that is taped up just did a loop so "it" was 2 of the reds coming into the 4 wire connector. You can see where the looped one was cut off the connector.(hope that makes sense)
Do me a favor and follow the red wire with the yellow crimp back to the bulkhead and see if when it goes through it has a 14 pink on one side and an 18 white/green on the other. If it does thats the fusible link,it might even say so on that wire.

thanks i will take a look tomorrow if i ever get some time off work
so i pulled the massive amount of tape off and found that both wires were spliced together. it looks like they cut one at the plug and added an 8" length to make it easier to splice i guess... but it runs through the firewall below the wiper motor and connects here then continues to the alternator. still dont understand why there is another wire tho??
