Ok guys need help/advice. The lower right dash pad in my car has a small tear at the vent ball. Can I repair this and if so how? I have a chance to get an excellent used one, but it is the wrong color. Anyone have any luck with dying these things? Fortunately my interior is black so the lighter colors shouldn't be a problem to dye.
I don't know about repairing it, but I think you could dye or paint the replacement black. Someone had dyed both of mine before I got it. I didn't even know it until I used some enanel reducer to try to remove a stain on one of them. Turned out that someone had dyed them the same color to hide some stains. I used Formby's Furniture Restorer on both of them to remove the dye and the stains. Both are good as new now.
Sweet73-
I've done alot of interior 'dye' coloring. The dye goes on just like spray paint. I don't think there's a system avail for D.I.Y. to achieve quality spot repair results. There's a 'skin' you can buy to shrink over the old panel, that would be second choice repair. But since you have a used pnl avail, I would grab it.
You're lucky with the black int color, as shade match won't be the prob, just poss 'gloss' level. The secret to good results is in the preparation. Make sure it's absolutely CLEAN, and void of all silicones (like Armor All).
My int is med saddle, and previous owners have 'mis-matched' practially the entire int with replacement parts and color matching. Everyone's interpitation of med saddle is different, including manufacturers. I'm not happy with it, but I
've greater things to worry about on my car.
Good Luck with yours- Rod :chevy
