Default Confirmation on my Carb thinking

I have a '79 L48, headers and no cat ( for the record done by the PO). I have an off idle lean condition ( rattling out the tail pipe ). I have adjusted the idle mixture screws to the point they no longer make a difference, so I'm looking at changing the primary rods and jets. It has the stock 40 rod and 72 jet. The car runs great at WOT so I think I need to get thinner rods rather than larger jets. I'm looking for some confirmation I'm on the right track. Thanks

Whether your thinking is right or not becomes irrelevant, because you can't buy primary rods for that carb from any source. You can richen it up at off-idle by increasing the pump shot or enlarging the IFR.

Is the accelerator pump working right? Have you tried disconnecting the EGR valve? I had the same issue with my 78. Luckily I had some junk Q-jets laying around the shop and found one with thinner rods. Changing them fixed the problem.

Just replaced the pump with an ethanol safe one and it's working fine. The EGR is removed, it was causing a vac leak.
Thanks for the input.
