[I]Re: Solid lifters. If rocker to valve stem lash is correct, what could cause noise like excessive rocker to valve stem clearance? i.e. click click click Is happening on one valve only.
I'm assuming you are speaking of the "hot" lash setting. Does the lifter noise sound louder than usual? More pronounced with engine under load? Can you give us more info?
From: Who says "Nothing is impossible" ? I've been doing nothing for years.
Re-lash them all, if there is still excessive noise then there are other possibilities, the ones I have personally seen are rocker studs pulling out, poly locks or plain nuts backing off, cam lobe going south, and last but not least I had a set of Comp Cams pushrods wear down at the ends on me, bad set.
One that hasn't happened to me but is a possibility is lack of oil to that rocker and it wears the rocker and pushrod tip at the same time, if there is only one make sure the pushrod oil hole is not clogged and also check the lifter itself, could be worn out
There's more but it early
Good luck

Yes, lash has been set hot. The noise is very much like that of a hydraulic lifter that needs adjusting. It's audible at idle as well as during rpm increases.

Thanks much for the possibilities. The noise starts when the engine is started after hot lash adjustment. Wouldn't that eliminate the adjusting nut since it would have to back off? But then who's to say how quickly a nut can back off. All of the nuts seem to require the same torque. I'll check the pushrod for clogging and check the rocker studs. Could weak or broken valve springs be a cause?
Thanks again,
Motor Head is correct. I too would start resetting the lash. He listed some possible causes and so did you. Start with the simple before tearing apart anything.

Thanks again,
Do a visual on the springs, you need good glasses or magnifying glass, ( yeah I know they can be taken off and checked ) a broken or weak spring will cause havoc
No insult, many have been fooled by exhaust leak tick, sounds just like a lifter ticking
Not insulted at all and thanks for the consideration. I did indeed find a large leak on number 3 cyl exhaust gasket between header and head. I replaced the gasket but the noise remained. I was so wishing that was the source of the noise. Which leads me to believe that the noise is from the no. 3 exhaust valve assy. I will check all the possiblilities that have been suggested, starting with the simplest first.

Thanks for the suggestion. Am using stock rocker arms and *****. Will check for wear. There was a exhaust leak at no 3. Replaced gasket. Thought that was it. Noise remained. Will check no 3 exh valve assy.

I forgot to add: If you find a rocker/ball that's blue, that's the one- if the bad one is on an exhaust valve, GM recommends moving a good one from an intake position to the exhaust/ GM says the intakes run a little cooler and makes it better for break in.

I'll do a visual of the springs.
Thanks much, FRINTZ
after all these checks have been done, worst case scenario is a bad valve stem or guide or wiping lobe,
check the lift at the pushrod with a dial indicator..good luck....

If you take any rockers off check the pushrod. The ends could be wearing down, ususally on top where it contacts the rocker cup.
A short story, I put a a brand new 355ci together with brand new parts. Hydraulic cam and I used brand new Comp Cams pushrods, the ones with the little ***** on the end and yes they are hardened.
I was constantly getting ticking noises and constantly adjusting the valves and looking for why I had to do this all the time.
Turns out the little ***** on the ends of the pushrods were wearing down, fast. Finally took a rocker off to inspect them and couldn't believe my eyes because I had it running with cutout valve covers and I could see they were getting plenty of oil. All 16 of them were worn down with low pressure single springs.
I replaced them with CC Magnum pushrods, and the problem went away. I use the same pushrods in my new 427ci with over 400lbs open spring pressure with no problems.
Also what oil are you using ? If not enough ZDDP then you could have a lobe going south.

Ahhh, sounds like a possibility. Thanks for the identification info. I'll check it out.

Thanks for the suggestion. I hope I find an "easy" answer first.

In a week I'll have time to inspect again. Will look at pushrods for wear. Am using Castrol GTX 10-40. Any comments on that oil?
