Fuel pump is another possibility. It can be 'ticking' and transfer the sound through the motor so it sounds like a valve train problem. If you have a valve cover off, see if you can correlate the frequency of the ticking with the action of just ONE valve. If the ticking is at the same 'pace' as valve train movement, it could be something in the valve train, something in the exhaust, the fuel pump...or even in the distributor (since it runs off the cam). If it is NOT at the same 'pace' as the valve train movement, try elsewhere.

In a week I'll have time to inspect again. Will look at pushrods for wear. Am using Castrol GTX 10-40. Any comments on that oil?
Thanks, FRINTZ
I just checked the flat tappet oil thread (http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c3-t...ppet-oils.html) and that oil is not listed. Check out that oil thread for suitable oils. Since the GTX 10W-40 is not listed, there may not be enough ZDDP for your flat tappet camshaft and you may have a worn lobe on the camshaft. Lets hope for the best, though.
[I]Re: Solid lifters. If rocker to valve stem lash is correct, what could cause noise like excessive rocker to valve stem clearance? i.e. click click click Is happening on one valve only.
Do a visual on the springs, you need good glasses or magnifying glass, ( yeah I know they can be taken off and checked ) a broken or weak spring will cause havoc
could also be a worn valve guide along with the other issues described including a wiping lobe....
