I bought this car a couple months ago and have been having problems with it ideling and hesitating off the start. Sometimes stalling and backfiring.
We'll a month ago I brought it to a mechanic who took the Edelbrok 750 CFM carb off and put on a Holley 600 CFM he had rebuit. Thsi didnt seem to change anything.
We'll I havent started the engine in two weeks. I go out there today and now I have a new problem.
I couldnt get it to start so I took the air cleaner off and put a little gas in there, two drops. What I realized is that gas is spewing everywhere. Dripping down the intake manifold, on the the ground. When I give it gas (which I have to since it won't idel until it warms up) I can se the gas coming out of the top of the carb. And lots of it. Not good.
What do you think is goping on???
Please help
My buddy said I should just buy a new Edelbrock carb and throw it on.
Yes, I agree. Just wondering how much he can do as far as tuning it for my car if I can't drive it to him. Maybe I'll put my Edelbrock 750 back on for now so I can drive it to him.
Throwing more parts at the car is not a very good way to trouble-shoot a problem, and it gets expensive. Holley carbs are pretty easy to work on. Like others have said, it sounds like a stuck float or crud in the needle/seat. Another possibility is if it has hollow plastic floats, one could be leaking causing the float to sink and flood the engine.
Since your guy is an hour away, attempting to fix the Holley would be what I'd do.
You can get to the float and needle/seat by removing one or both of the fuel bowls. If it has sight plugs for setting the float level, you don't need any special tools for setting the levels after you remove and clean the needle/seat or replace the float. I think an Edlebrock carb is a step backwards from a Holley, it's the old Carter AFB from years ago.

I was looking online and saw a site that gave a list of some problems and fixes. I think what's happeneing to me is fuel is shooting out the vent tubes. it says to:
Lower float levels, lower fuel pressure, clean out and/or replace needle and seat assembly, make sure the floats move freely.
Any chance anyone knows of some documents out there that show pictures to help illustrate what i need to do?
Guess I could call my guy and have him walk me through it.
We checked the needle/seat, swapped it out. No dice. Fuel pump was fine. Turns out it was the float. It was filling up with gas. Guess there was a small hole in it. Swapped it out, hopefully I'm in good shape now.
Well, it happened again. Gas spewing out of the front vent of my carb. So this time I took it apart and saw that once again, my float was filling up with gas. Crazy. How could this happen twice in a row? Lat time my mechanic gave me anothe rused one.
Anyway, now mor eused parts for me. I ordered a brand new float from Summit. Will replace, hopefully this will be the end of my carb problems...
You may know this already but regardless how you fix the fuel problem you should consider changing your oil. With all that gas dumpimg into the motor you might have diluted the oil. Dont want engine trouble on top of the fuel carb issue. Hope the new float does the trick.
Thanks 71406. I didnt think of that. So you think the gas could be getting inside the engine? I thought if it flows out one of the vents in the acrb it would just fall down on top of the engine and drip down the sides. It didnt occur to me that the gas oculd be making its way into the engine oil area.
