Default Removal: Vapor Return System?

I have a '72 that I'm in the process of bringing back to life in the form of a stripped down driver, and while I'm in there running new brake lines - can I get rid of what I'm assuming is the vapor return system?

Looking at what's currently in the car, I have the hardline that runs down the left frame rail connected to what I'm assuming is the charcoal canister behind the left eggcrate. The back end runs up to a black box connected to the top of the tank, that's currently missing the bottom. (guess from where my tank was spilling on right turns when full!)

Long story short: can I take all this out? The vaccuum line that comes out of the canister currently is disconnected and dangling. Looking around I'm not even sure I can see where it would hook into.

On that note as well: which vaccuum lines are essential to the car? I received the car in "running" condition, but as I'm going through the front and rear ends I'm finding a lot of vaccuum lines that are disconnected and presumably are just vaccuum leaks. Are there any that I can consolidate?

Third: If I pull the AC / Heater core will there be a large hole in the firewall that I'll have to patch?

Thanks for your help, sorry for so many questions!

...I did this to the Silver '75 coupe I used to have when I changed it over to a 4spd car.

...I simply removed the canister and hardline and back at the tank I plugged the nipple at the top of the tank. Since a 75's fuel comes out of the top of the tank, not bottom fed, it doesn't have that black plastic anti-siphon/anti-rollover valve that the canister '72-'74s had.

...you will want to run a '68/'69 style vented gas cap too. Since I couldn't do that for my '75, I simply drilled a small 1/16" hole in the unleaded fuel type cap.

Hi s,
Third... when you remove the heater core but leave the box there is no hole. When you remove the box too, you are left with a hole. People make a simple flat cover to bolt in place or do a serious fiberglass patch.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan

This is the opening for a non-a/c car.

Excellent - that's good to hear. The more I can do to clean out the car the better.

Would I need to run a vented gas cap if I ran a breather tube from that vapor return box on top of the tank?
