When I fill the tank in my 76 the gauge dose not go to the F mark on the gauge it stops on around the 3/4 mark, has any one else had this problem and fixed it. Will appreciate any help I can get.
Does it go forever on E? How much gas can you put in it when it hits E? My guess would be a bent float arm. Could be a less buoyant float or the sender is shot.
My 75 has a bladder, I believe 75, 76 and 77's all had tank bladders. If yours is still intact it could be bulged slightly causing it to stop the float and give incorrect readings.
Mine never goes to full either. I think it's because the filler spout triggers the automatic shutoff of the pump when the gas in the tank is still around three inches from the top.

....this is the reason I pulled my old '75's bladder out in '94. I ran out of gas on the way to a cruise-in 40mi away because the collapsing sidewall of the bladder held the float arm in the "up" position showing on my gauge I had over 1/2 a tank.
...this is also one reason why some '75-'77 Corvette owners can only get 12-14gals of gas in their tank. Before I pulled the bladder in my '75, it's never take more than 14gals. This was before the running out of gas incident.
When the gauge doesn't read properly at "EMPTY", then you should question the it. I never heard of anyone getting stranded from having too "full" of a tank.
Nah, it flops WAY past the Full mark when you do that. I know from experience.
Bet you thought you were getting great mileage , huh ?
I've had several come in on the hook for that reason. I even had a guy remove his tank looking for the build sheet and he forgot to reattach the sender wire , about a month later he went on a little trip and ran out of gas and didn't put 2 and 2 together , boy was he pissed when I called and told him he was just out of gas.

I hope I'm not stepping on any toes, but I think you've got to be kind of unobservant to think your fuel gage is working when you unplug that sender lead. At least on my car, the needle goes damn near horizontal past the FULL mark. No amount of fuel will ever cause the sender to send THAT signal.
We only found out abour the problem with the fuel gauge because we told that the price of Gas was going up from $11.50 to $12.10 EC $ per Imp Gal.that's 2.60 EC to the US $ . and the gauge was reading 1/2 tank so we desided to fill up but when the pump clicked out the gauge stopped at the 3/4 mark I will try and see if I can get some more gas into the tank and see if as MY 76 Ray says maybe the service station spout trigger stopped before the tank was full.
PS
My son and myself just finished doing a compltete restoration on the Car which took us 9 years to complete .
