The restoration books I have all show the vettes totally stripped down. They're showing how to do the whole car, every piece.
Nothing needs done to the interior & the paint is original but very good for its age and I don't want to take that on for at least 3-5 years.
My question, can I separate the body from the frame without taking the whole thing apart? All the metal under the car is what really needs attention.
It would be great to do a frame restoration without committing to a whole disassembly at this point in time. If it is possible, would it be a workable winter project (300 hours or so)?
This is my first vette, really MY FIRST CAR since the high school days, and I can’t go against the good advice of enjoying the car before getting in too deep.
I asked a similar question once, and someone made a helluva point. They basically told me that if you mess up your paint while pulling the body off the frame, you're doing a bad job of it. a good seperation/joining does not scratch the paint. As for the interior, I think you'll have to take some of it apart to get at things like shifter linkages, and speedo cables, but nothing that seriously can't be done in a weekend or two(the interior part).
Mike, I've been working on my body-off resto this winter and I just have to say that it's been very revarding and had lot of fun doing it, but just to say the warning words, this is one big snowball!!! When you remove something and underneath you'll find something and you think why not do that at the same time as well..... so it just starts snowballing.
