After getting back in town this evening...I followed the instructions I got and on the paper I printed off from Lars. So the good news, I put the car at 10 degrees lined up the rotor with the number one cylinder, fired it off, and it started.
The bad news after it started........the idle/revs started climbing and it dies. So I turned the dist slightly and it did the same thing.
What I had done, yanked the old peformer intake, and put on a new Summit Crosswind intake. I took my time cleaing off all the old gasket material, put on new Felpro gaskets using black permatex.
Any ideas on what this might need.....a timing adjustment? I didn't install my new Demon Carb yet...still using the Carter just to get it running again...didn't want to change it, until I was sure the intake job was right.
The other good news.....hood shuts fine :)....now to get it running good again :(
Re: More Distributor/Timing Help Needed (ZORA_RULES)
VACUUM.......Are you sure all of your hoses etc are hooked back up? After you fire, you start trying to pull more vacuum, with the leak that you have, you lean out and stall..........
Re: More Distributor/Timing Help Needed (tnt76vette)
Thxs 76.
That's what I was thinkiing too........vacum. Man I hope I don't have a leak at the intake to block/head junction. I was extremly careful in placing the manifold down, and took consiederable time with it. One thing that bothered me, was the instructions called for just using a .25" of silicone, and not the black small rubber gaskets that came in the felpro kit. I ensured that the silicone went all the way up to the intake gaskets. The silicone set up for at least a few hrs, before I tried to even start the car. I used the Black Hi Temp Permatex stuff. I'll check all hoses, but I sure thought I had everything hooked back up.
Re: More Distributor/Timing Help Needed (ZORA_RULES)
Forgive me for asking such a dumb question (I AM trying to help you :yesnod: ) did you torque down your intake slowly in increments to the proper torque recs in the proper sequence? Is the carb properly drawn down? Did You use the same carb gasket or a new one?
Re: More Distributor/Timing Help Needed (tnt76vette)
76,
No such thing as a dumb ?, especially when dealing with me! Yes, I beleive so. I followed the bolt sequence..that were both in the instructions and in my hanes manual, and went in three tightining sequences....don't remember the exact torque figures of the top of my head.
I beleive the Carb is tight, I did not use a new carb gasket as I planned on just getting it running with the old carter (to make sure my intake job was proper) and then install the demon with new gasket (I was afraid if it done run properly with both intake and new demon...I wouldn't know what was causing the problem....so I assumed going back with the carter would ensure that if I had a problem....it was something to do with the intake). I'll check all connections....and see if I can figure out a way to test for leaks....touch now, since car won't run long enough to listen through a hose around the intake....I must have a serious leak somewhere. :(
Re: More Distributor/Timing Help Needed (ZORA_RULES)
I did not use a new carb gasket as I planned on just getting it running with the old carter(
That is the likely the source of your vacuum leak. Once the gasket has been used, it MUST be replaced. Especially if it's on a different intake this time.
Re: More Distributor/Timing Help Needed (tnt76vette)
Will Do. Actually the Carter had what looked like a stack of 3 gaskets. Bottom was what looked like a normal carb gasket, middle a metal but very thin looking gasket (same form as paper one) and then on top another paper looking gasket. I was afraid to disgard any of them, as the car ran fine previously with all three. I'll try putting on one single new gasket though, and see what that does for me.
Re: More Distributor/Timing Help Needed (ZORA_RULES)
rpm can overcome a big leak. So crank your idle speed screw or screws in to get a 1500 or so idle. You then take a big soft paint brush and dip it in gas. Then dob it around where any possible leak might be. if the rpm goes up you've found it
It is not desiriable to use any type of sealer on the dist. gasket. You don't need any and chunk could fall down in the block and clog a small oil passage
Thxs Gkull as usual! I'll bump up the idle and see what that gives me. I've done the same sort of thing (paint bursh) before, but I used WD-40 to squirt around the carb base on the old 70 I had and listen for an increase in RPM. But that leak wasn't bad enough to kill the car. I also will not put any silicone on the distributor or carb base...don't want any trouble there. :smash:
