Grounding question

I have 1968 that I am re building. The none of the courtesy lights work. It looks like I am not getting a ground to the lights. If I ground the white wire at the lights they all come on. I started looking at the door switches and have two questions: I understand that the door switches at the rear of the doors lights the "door ajar" light but these switches are mounted in fiberglass and only have one wire so how do they ever get to ground? Also, the hinge side door switch on the drivers side only has on wire but its black not white like the assembly manual says.....whats going on?

my 70 has two wires(blk and wht) to door ajar switch at rear of door. courtesy lights are (i think) orange and white and do not go directly to ground.

The pass side should have one white wire that when grounded turns on the lights. The drivers side has one connector with two white wires for the lights and one black for the key buzzer.
