I've got an '81 that always needs coolant. I have to add a quart of new coolant after a few times of running the engine. To make a long story short, after checking all the hoses and tightening them, I discovered a dripping puddle of fresh coolant right under the heater water valve. A quick check confirmed the source location.
I went out and bought a new valve, but see that the new one has what appears to be drain holes at the bottom of the valve. I have a plastic valve on the shelf that has vent holes around vacuum diaphragm housing that let in air so diaphragm can move. Are these the holes yours has? There should not be any coolant leaking from these holes. The shaft seal has probably failed allowing coolant to leak from the vent holes. Good luck, mike...
