I have a 79 L-82, with the original radio and 8 track. My problem is that the player plays all tapes at a fast speed. I tried to clean the heads with a 8 track cassette head cleaner to no avail. I have tried numerous tape but all play on fast speed. Radio works fine. Any suggestions? Thanks.LT
When you find the solution...let me know...I have the identical problem. I do find that if I push in slightly and to the right the tape will play at the correct speed although I am not sure why this should be the case. According to my shop manual, if the speed changes you should have it serviced....what service this is is what we need to know I guess.
When had my 79, I had the 8 track, and lots of tapes I collected at swap meets. I had a problem of skipping tracks.
I tried everywhere locally, and wasnt surprised, no one would work on it, because frankly, most of the historical knowlegde in working on them is gone. So I looked in Hemmings Motor News.
There, I found about 30 radio repair places that specializes in repairing/restoring car radios. While I cant remember who I sent mine to, thats where I got the info from
I do remember, I called around first, and the prices for work varied GREATLY among the folks listed, so call around.
I know someone who may be able to fix it. This guy fixed the tube type radio for me out of a 55 Chevy. He has been doing this stuff for decades and may be able to help.

Give them a call. I have never taken something to them that they couldn't fix.
We used to put a pack of matches jammed in the left side to put force on the the drive wheel. Basically, if I recall correctly, it is the lack of pressure on the drive wheel that causes it to spin faster. I work on these occaisionally.
