I'm doing a full frame off on my '70 and have the bare frame blasted and coated with an epoxy primer and ready for final coat that I want to match the original color and gloss. I belong to NCRS and the judging manual indicates anything from a semi-flat to a semi-gloss black is correct. Eastwood has a product called "Extreme Chassis Black" available in a satin finish listed as 60-70% gloss. I was all set to purchase a gallon until I read on Eastwood's website comments that several users were complaining about excessive drying time and the flatner settling to the bottom of the can causing a higher gloss finish.
I'd appreciate comments from Forum members who have used this product or had a good experience with other brands. Thanks...Redroadster
Hi RR,
I believe the amount of gloss on the frame could vary on different areas of the same frame, and from frame to frame.
I think it's better to be a bit to 'dull' than a bit too 'shiny'.
For me there's an issue besides the degree of shine; the amount of paint used. There seems to be a very thin coating on original frames. There is no appearance of build-up from primer and coat(s) of paint.
I used Krylon 1613. It's the way I wanted it to look but it's way too pretty. I like the Krylon because it's easy to touch up; which may need to be done as you reassemble the chassis.
Have you checked the TDB archives? There's lots of discussion and suggestions for the paints people have used.
Regards,
Alan
PS: Stripped at home (not blasted), powder coated, sanded, Krylon 1613 acrylic lacquer.
Thanks Alan...Great looking frame! I'm inspired. I'm looking for more of a "medium" gloss for the frame with a little higher gloss for the A-frame and other components. May also look at Quanta products. I want a paint that's available in both bulk and spray cans for the touch up reason you cited. Both the body and frame are in a Corvette shop in Cambridge. The bare frame will be ready for paint in a week or so. Once it's painted, I'll return it to a shop in Centreville to reinstall all the suspension and other components while the body is being painted. I'm not familar w/ TDB?? How do I access the site. Appreciate your interest...Redroadster
Hi RR,
Since you mentioned NCRS I though youd realize I was referring to the Techical Discussion Board on the NCRS Website. LOT'S of good information and a few scary people. Sorry for the confusion.
It sounds like your having fun with your car.

Alan

Thanks Alan...I'm a little embarassed. Having been in NCRS for over 25 years, I've never logged into TDB because I just drove the car. Now that it is in restoration will do so. We've owned this car since 1972 and know it really is #'s matching so want to preserve its originality without getting crazy. Never a trailer queen.
Will be at OC 15-16 Oct. for the boardwalk drive but in our C-5. Best...Redroadster
