Default Update on '71 LS6 (pics available)

I finally got a chanch to get back over to the ranch where the LS6 is stored . A refresher for those of you who may have missed the original post : This vette was ordered new in late '70 for an April '71 delivery . It is a one owner , two top conv. , correct matching # engine and drive train , automatic , CPX suffix , (only 188 LS6's --I wonder how many were automatic ?) > For the '71 registry : VIN is 194671S113063 , trim tag data is H 24 , 420 trim , 989 paint , correct 074 heads ( no dates known because heads are installed) , 3963512 block , L17 70 date , 3986196 carb ? , 3963569 intake , power windows , brakes , steering , no tilt/tele , 70 lb. oil pressure gauge , 6500 red line , delux interior trim . Stamping pad reads : T0128 CPX C11S113063 I have a few pics available for those of you that are interested . You will have to E mail me geopar@gvtc.com and I will send to you . Everything looks original and correct to me , except I do not understand the Jan. 28 (T1028) engine stamping that has the correct vin # for a March built vette ? Were some of these engines built and stamped early in production and then VIN stamped as orders came through ? Inquiring minds wish to know ! There is a spattering of paper work , including all title history (one) , bill of sale , origination form , owners manuel and protecto plate . There is no window sticker , tank sticker , or anything eses at this time (owner is looking through his dad's stuff--but he's not real motivated). Stay tuned for further info , Geo

George,

Thanks for posting the update on the 1971 LS-6 convertible and yes, I'd love to see the photos!

I guess the big question that I have concerns the L 17 70 (December 17, 1970) block casting date and the T1028CPX (October 10 [1970]) assembly date... There really isn't any way possible that the engine could be assembled before the block was cast so there is something not quite right here. I gather that you confirmed the numbers on the pad?

Everything you have stated about the car so far sounds appropriate for an LS-6 except for the discrepency mentioned above.

Regards,

I get the feeling thar this may become (maybe it all ready is) on of those vettes that will never be sold because the owner is going to "restore it someday" , or "if I wait long enough , it will be worth a lot more" , or "blah , blah , blah" ! The good news is that I've educated the owner on the vettes "real world" condition and what it would take to demand the $'s he thinks it's worth . Another cool aspect to this story is that I may be able to get the car into my climate controlled garage for storage . Then I may be able to start the restoration on it with the understanding that future "gains" on this will be shared . ( or maybe after I get it in my possesion and perform the "miricle" of bringing her back--- I might get to own her ?). The last encouraging facit of this story is he and I are developing a mutual respect and liking of one another , and my wife and his are VERY good friends . I would like to hear more from the "gurus" out there concerning this vette ! The saga continues , we'll see how it all plays out . Geo

Geo, good luck in your quest to acquire such a rare Corvette! If I were you I would try anything possible to get him to find as many of those original docs as possible. Keep us posted.

Sounds real enough!! I would estimate in it's current condition it is worth $75k. After a complete frame off restoration it will be worth $77.5k! :)
j/k...... what do I know?? MJ

I am very interested in a picture of the oil pressure gauge. One thing you did not mention was the TI ignition. Does it have it? If it is a real LS6, it should have the ignition module (or 3 holes) visible in front of the opened hood on the driver side inner fender. I would not be too concerned that the motor was built in january and the car in april, after all, they only sold 188 cars. Check for the vin in the trans and the rear axle ratio in the housing. One other thing to look for is a bracket attached to the passenger side front carb mounting stud that holds the fuel line in place. Only LS6 cars had this, LT1 cars had a similar bracket that attached to the rear bolt. Car should have AIR pump . Please email me pictures to morganjd@att.net

I thought all 188 of the '71 LS6 'Vette's had M22's. OK I could be wrong.

This car has aluminum heads right?

Just to be safe, confirm these numbers yourself and be careful to watch out for a re-stamped engine pad. Also, look for threaded oil boss for external oil system by oil filter. This indicates a 4-bolt main, which it should have.

All other numbers look good according to my reference material.

Good Luck, Mark
