How do I tell if my electric choke is bad? I have 12Volts at the green wire. I tested the resistance of the coil and I have 2 ohms (practically a short) between the input contact and the body of the carb. Choke opens less than halfway after 20 minutes running and I have the choke set so that it is barely closed when cold.

Re: Is my Electric Choke Bad??? (stickboy)
First, pull your big black round choke coil cover off and make sure that there is no gasket installed between the black coil cover and the aluminum housing. If there's a gasket there, yank it off and throw it across the garage: Electric chokes cannot use a gasket at this location since the gasket will provide a partial insulation between the hot coil and ground. Pull the gasket out, and the coil will work.
If the coil still does not open the choke fully, you have a bad coil. Go to NAPA and get a new one for about $20. And make sure you don't put a gasket under it when you install it.....
No Gasket, and there is almost a short between the choke terminal and the carb housing (only 2 ohm resistance) I was pretty sure it was bad, but when I looked it up at NAPA it was $60, maybe I was looking at the wrong part, I will look again. I was looking for a secong opinion or a way to test it.
Say Stickboy,
You are not alone. I've been futzing with one for a year now!!!! I put a new pulloff on it, and it did not work.
I placed the new one along with the old in the oven at 200 to see if the "opened", meaning if the spring wound up,
The new one opens faster but does not fully release the choke cam so it idles down until I've run the car for like
15 minutes of running. YUou should be able to kick the pedal and release the cam to slow the idle.
I have found I could rotate the choke clockwise to relaese earlier but it hardly opens the choke to cold start.
Another problem is the choke lite tends to come on and stay on. Another post mentioned a relay in the console
by the shifter is the culpret.
John Ulrich-
Concerning your 'choke light' staying on. This can be an indicator that the alt is not working correctly. You may want to check alt output, this could be your culprit. Hope this helps get you ahead...Good Luck -Rod :chevy
