I have a new to me 1968. I am working out some electricl issues. What does the "Headlight" red light top right of the gauge cluster mean? Is it supposed to be on when headlights are on or when one is burnt our or???
On my 69, It comes on momentarily when you turn on the headlights. That may or may not be correct, but that is how my car has been for the 30 years that I have owned it.

The warning light is supposed to tell you if one or both headlight assemblies is not all the way up when the lights are on. There is a switch near each headlight that gets activated when they are up.

I don't have this option in my 68 and there is no bulb or wire for it in the center gauge cluster.

The previous owner may have installed a 69 or later center gauge bezel with the headlight warning light.
Hi,
Here's a picture of the switch in the headlight mechanism.
The button gets pushed in to turn the dash warning light off.
Started in model year 69 as '75 posted.

So if its not supposed to be on my 1968, I wonder why there is a bulb in the harness for thats at the center console and its on?
Can you see what wires are going to the bulb ?
I think I might have found 2 more mistakes on my "you know who's" diagram.
I hope some 68 guys chime in so I can note these mistakes in PEN on my diagram.
Hmmmmm...my finish is rough. So I must have a 69+ console? Mine has "Door Ajar" on top and "Head Lamps" on the bottom. The wire colors are gray and black.
On my diagram the gray and black wired socket is listed as the headlamp door socket BUT the gray ties in with the other gray dash lights and the black goes to ground , meaning it will be on when the dash lights are on.
The seat belt lamp is a weird one also-its a single black that goes to nowhere.
Interesting...thats what my light does. It goes on with the head lights and adjusts with the dimmer control.Thats why I was wondering what its purpose was
Okay, I was going to ask about the seat belt light next. What drives that?
Staying with the headlamp socket , I cant help but thinking that is supposed to be the bulb for the ignition switch illumination. Do you have a bulb in the ign switch ?
I believe if you turn the wiper over-ride switch the "headlamp" light will turn off.
The over-ride switch is the big black **** in the center located under the steering column.
The seat belt lamp plugs into this which is just a set of contacts the light comes on to remind you to buckle up and turns off once you push the button under it.
These pictures are upside down compared to how this would be installed.
Hi O1,
I believe the seat belt light and switch is just a reminder on the 68-71 cars. You need to push the button to turn the light off each time you start the engine. 72 cars started with a timer for the reminder light (15 seconds?) and later went to a light that shut off when the seat belt was extended.

My car did noit have a socket/bulb plugged into the seat belt warning "hole". I assume this is supposed rto be a socket/bulb only with no wires from the harness since it looks like the two copper strips provide the "juice". What does this socket look like cause I need one.

TIP: I used a dash illumination bulb and twist in socket out of a Pinto in my '68. Works like a charm.
The 68 assembly instruction manual (AIM) will be a big help for you.
