I'm just getting into working on my Corvette, its an '82 with Cross-Fire fuel injection. I have been casually searching online and there doesn't seem to be an abundance of performance parts for the TBI engine. I don't want to go too radical, I was thinking some mildly ported heads with roller rockers and stiffer valve springs. A mild cam, intake manifold, and an exhaust. what sort of parts are interchangeable between a carb'd vette and the TBI? I know my 3800 very well but am somewhat ignorant with this one. I hope to eventually know as much as I do about my 3800. also what are the options for tuning these cars? on my GTP a tune made a huge difference but I don't know about these older cars, is it even worth "tuning" or is it pretty much just bolt on parts?
I'm sure others will chime in but speaking form the experience of having an 84 with the same motor you have very few choices. It is a pathetically choked up induction/fuel delivery system and unless you switch to another system you're kind of hosed. Sorry man, it wasn't one of GM's better moves.
The intake manifolds and ported out TBs are out there for a price. Add a good set of Alum. heads and you can get over 6000rpm with the right fuel pressure. I personally installed a Hypertec chip, electric fans and dual exhaust and pulls hard from idle to 5000rpm.
It's all about what you want to spend!!!
Lots and lots of good information on the above site. I would add up the parts you're looking to impart onto your vette and think about other options.
Not to say that you cannot improve what you have, but I'm a bang for buck kind of guy. I found it was cheaper to swap in something else (LS series engine in my case) than start with the crossfire upgrades. However, this is assuming a bit on one's abilities, time, money, and effort.
I will suggest that my biggest problem I had was solved by a simple rebuild of the throttle bodies, adjusting the fuel pressure up, and installing a higher flowing in tank fuel pump. All of this is covered on the site link.
