When my car upshifts without me accelerating much, it makes a loud clunk noise that comes from the rear of the car. I can visualize what is happening (rear-end mounts loose? or something) but I have no idea what is technically wrong (to start pricing the fix).
If I'm accelerating pretty quick, there is no clunk when shifting.
No, the bushing you are looking for is at the front end of the differential. This bushing will deteriorate and allow the differential to rotate up and down in use. This is the clunk you hear.

if its the front of the differential bushing it will also clunk when putting it into reverse. use lock tight on this bolt when you replace the bushing, you would be surprised how many of them loosen up over time.
Yes the front mounting set-up on nose of rearend , I found this to be
totalliy shot and MISSING the big rubber when I got my '74 four speed.
Installed new stuff out of Urethane rubber and It was like another car.
Be sure to check the two threw-bolts in that bracket also ? They
need to be heathy and tight on front of rear housing .
