Default Door Lock Cylinder

77 Vette. For some reason, when I close the door on my Vette I always push on the door lock cylinder to keep the finger prints off the body. The other day it felt like there was some movement when I closed the door. Sure enough I actually pushed the door lock cylinder in slightly. Anyone experience this before, or have any ideas how to repair this. Maybe I should just leave it alone, and not make it worse. After the fact I realize this was a stupid thing to do, but at the time it seemed ok. Cheers...

Tommy, the lock cylinder is held in place with a door lock pawl retainer clip part #501088 in the Corvette Central catalog. Not to hard to replace jus have to remove the door panel. lower the window all the way down and you should be able to reach through an opening at top rear of door. Its very tight and you will not have much room to remove the old and replace with new. Old one might be OK it may have slipped off on side. Any not hard to do. Takes more time to take door PNL off and put back on, thanks.

Another possibility could be that the fiberglass around the door lock has weakened, and the lock has started to push thru.

I was replacing my locks and the passenger side lock pushed straight thru. I needed to glass over the hole, and then recut a new hole for the lock.

If the problem is with the fiberglass, as SGM says, the retainer is held on VERY tight, so I'm not sure what the best way to strengthen the fiberglass would be - anybody have any ideas?

I believe my issue is with the fiberglass giving away. Sounds like I will have to pull the door panel and evaluate further. Thanks to all.

I have a similar problem as my lock cylinder pops out when shutting the door too hard and you can easily pull it out of the door with no resistance. I ordered the pawl 501088 mentioned above but, I just received it today and they are only 1/2" x 1/2" or so. I expected this to be a good 1-1.5" across and have it wrap around the entire cylinder on the inside of the door skin. The pawls I received are the smaller in this kit http://www.ecklers.com/corvette-door...1977early.html . I was expecting something more like the larger part in this kit....

I can't seem to find a diagram on how these install so I'm not sure if these are the correct part to fix my lock cylinder. Anyone have any ideas on this?

Thanks in advance,
Chris

Looks like part # 31554 is what you need and is sold separately.

You can get the whole deal locally, comes with 2 new locks, plastic gaskets, 2 new keys and the 2 mounting pawls for about 10 bucks at Autozone etc. Probably a lot cheaper than the shipping etc.
Bought a set a few weeks ago.
Or at a junkyard, almost every car made in the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's used them.

Here is a pic of the alarm lock, a little different, fiberglass is missing of course, but same idea.

If the fiberglass is that weak, you may have to grind the inside down almost thru to the outside, reglass it and them grind it to close to the original thickness. Or do it on the outside too, but that will require paint.
