I installed a few parts off of another engine. Aluminum high-rise intake, distributor, and edelbrock carb. I am a beginner and learning as I go. I have everything back together and being a beginner, i took out the distributor without marking it. Now my engine is out of time and its backfiring and shaking and won't stay running long.
So far i have got the number 1 piston up and turned distributor shaft to the number 1 plug wire. It will run but it runs rough and backfires some. Ive tweaked and turned the distributor and can't get it to run just right. I believe some of it may be in my vacuum or my carb as well.
Can someone give me detailed instructions on where to start in simple terms? How to use a timing light? Which vacuum lines and where are they suppose to go in the edelbrock carb? How to adjust my carb just right?
Help appreciated. I am a beginner so please use simple terms.
the timing light (can get from auto zone for around $39) goes on plug wire one. the edelbrock carb has two on front and one on rear. looking at carb from front the vacuum port on far left is timed vacuum and right is full time. hook your vacuum advance from distribustor to the timed vacuum port. make sure the port in back is plugged into break booster or pcv only. do not split PCV and Brakebooster with a T they need there own straight path. from plug 1 on distributor make sure is 1 8 4 3 6 5 7 2 going counter clockwise the number one post is normally in the 5 oclock position. make sure the back and front of intake are sealed down good that is a leaky spot especially if you used the rubber gaskets that came with kit always try to use silicone. this is the limit of my knowledge sorry i dont know more but the guys/girls on here are extremely helpful and someone will help you out. also rember when in doubt YOUTUBE it their is probably a video on it at least i know their is on edelbrock carb tunning.
my car doesn't have the timing guage on the timing chain cover so i can't use the timing light.
How exactly do you do the screw driver procedure? I just need to get it close. Is it when the piston first touches the screwdriver on the way up or before it goes down?
I tried this once before and not sure if i done it correctly. My distributor seems to only slide down all the way only in certain places. I can't get it to slide down exactly on the number one wire.

You have to determine exact TDC so you can accurately time the car with a light. If you don't have a tab, you need to install one and verify it. You can use my TDC paper for determining TDC - e-mail me for a copy. I noticed you didn't ask me for a copy of the distributor installation paper, and you are asking questions covered in the paper...
