I am working on wakening up the engine on my 79 (intake, carb, headers) and would like to replace the fuel pump with a performance one and also dress up the engine . Most aftermarket pumps do not have the return line. Can I do away with stock pump and replace the gas cap with a vented cap??
I agree that the stock pump is not the prettiest, but they are, by far, your best option if you intend to drive the car. The return line will prevent vapor lock, the pump output does not require a regulator, and its capactity is adequate for 500 HP.
BK has outlined why downgrading to two line pump is not good from a functional point of view and how a shiny one is unnecessary and wasted money from a performance point of view.
The presence of 2 or 3 lines on a pump has no relationship to having a vented or non vented gas cap. The air entering the gas tank to replace the fuel used is routed by the charcoal canister in the drivers side wheel well.
I really appreciate everyones response, I just needed to understand the full function of the return line. I will keep the original pump.
As far as the lights, I believe it was a loose vacuum line
Can I get your imput on carb, I am replacing the intake with the Eldebrock performer - my thoughts were to use a Holley 600 cfm -
The original Qj was bad so I replaced it with a Qj that i took off a truck. Rebuild it myself and works extremely well, excellent response. I have both a Holley and a Qj on the workbench just need to decide which carb to use now. I appreciate any response.
