I bought a 79 recently. The tach did't work when i bought it. The other day it starts working messed up. Idling at 3500 and if you just touched the gas it pegged it. I don't know much about wiring where do i start looking for the problem? Is there a link that would help? Thanks in advance. :conehead
I'm no expert either, but I understand from conversation here that they have a circuit board on back that goes south and needs replacement once in awhile. Not sure, just remember seeing that.
Mine did not work at all. Stuck at 1500 RPM's. While redoing the interior, I pulled the dash panel out and removed the speedo and tach. I found the circuit board fried. I replace the board and ran a 12V current to it and reset the needle and it now works just fine. It you remove the tach, be sure to drop the steering column or else you will crack the pad on removal.
Well, my tach was not working when I bought my care as well. It would try to work, but never really worked correctly.
I replaced the Tach Circuit Board in the Instrument Cluster, and it solved all my problems. I did some research on this, and the tach for 78-82 was having burnout problems, and this was a common problem.
