Default rust is my foe

Hey guys,

Been a while since I was last here. I was trying to get everything I need for my rebuild lined up.

I finally got a short block on the way and hope to have it in the next week.

I will be putting the engine together in my garage. My garage is not temperature controlled. I do have a space heater to warm it up when I am working in there. My question is how prone to rust is an open engine? Or a closed up engine as far as that goes.

Thanks, Marty

If the temp drops below the dew point, you're gonna get condensation and consequently, rust. Spray down the machined surfaces with wd-40 & make sure and bag the engine to keep out moisture and dust/dirt.

But not a plastic bag as it could hold condensation, maybe try an old but clean blanket or sheets. Ed

If cooler weather is humid in your area, rust will be an issue. A reasonable solution is to buy some light oil in a spray can and keep all bare surfaces sprayed down a bit until you can apply paint. This is more mess to deal with...and cleaning when you do paint...but it will minimize the rust. And, if the rust is very light and doesn't pit anything, it's not a big deal anyway.

The block is coming painted. If I get the heads and oil pan on right away and keep it soaked in wd40, do you think I would be pretty safe?

I will definetly keep it wrapped good, in a blanket.

Thank you, Marty

WD-40 is not oil...it is not a protectant...it is a "water dispersant". Use a film of light oil to protect the block.
